KRISTEN BOWER ENDOWMENT TOPS $200,000

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Kristen Bower Eagle Club Endowment at The University of Southern Mississippi is now the school's largest athletic endowment.
The second annual Kristen Bower Golf Tournament, played April 28 at the Chateau Élan Golf Course in Gainesville, Ga., generated in excess of $80,000 and pushed the endowment's current value to $228,185.
The annual tournament was sponsored by Clipper Petroleum which is operated by Golden Eagle Head Football Coach Jeff Bower's father, Tom, mother, Shirley and older brother, Tom, III. The event drew 265 players and the field, which included Golden Eagle coaches and athletic administrators along with Atlanta, Ga., area Golden Eagle alumni and friends of the program, utilized both courses at the Chateau Élan facility.
This year's tournament raised over $10,000 more than the 1999 event and Coach Bower was more than pleased with the results. "It's really inspiring and meaningful to the Bower family that people remember Kristen," he said. "Their interest in and support of the endowment generates benefits for the athletic department and the entire University that are almost immeasurable. A lot of people put a lot of hard work into making this project successful and I and my family are thankful to each of them."
The Kristen Bower scholarship was established in 1997 and is awarded annually to a former walk-on football player who earns scholarship assistance through hard work and sacrifice. Running back Michael Villalonga was the 1999 recipient.
Preparations for the 2001 tournament already are under way.
